Carpentry Project – How Tos, Dos and Don’ts

Things Beginners Should Know Before Embarking on a Carpentry Project

Nowadays, most people have come to enjoy carpentry projects, mostly for the reason that they get to work on the projects with their own hands and get to call the finished project, their own pride and joy or perhaps they do not want to pay an insane amount of money on a piece of simple furniture that you find in retail shops.

For beginners, there are a lot of things you need to know before you start working on your woodwork project. When it comes to tools, carpentry square and tape measure are the most important tools to have. Without a measuring tape, you will not be able to determine the correct measurements of the board. With the square in hand, you are able to draw a precise straight line which you will cut later on.

Apart from the compulsory measuring tools, you will need a trusty tool to cut wood or board with such as the hand saw or electrical saw. If you have not used a saw before, a hand saw will be a good alternative for the fact that you cannot get hurt easily with it. If you feel confident enough to use electric saw, a circular saw is a good choice for cutting straight lines. But, if your carpentry project involves curves, you should get the jigsaw to cut those curves without any difficulty. Using power tools are easier to get yourself hurt especially if you are not used to them. Therefore, remember to read the instructions carefully when using power tools, and do not forget to wear safety goggles.

Generally, carpentry projects require drilling into the wood or board, for that reason you need a drill to help you make the holes. There is a cordless drill that provides you with plenty of power for drilling. You can also use the drill to put in and take out screws. Most drills are battery-operated and they come with extra battery which means there is always one in the charger and the drill.

Tools used in Carpentry

With all the carpentry tools mentioned above, there are several projects you can execute. Include screws and glue with the tools you can make cabinets, plain coffee tables, stools, bookshelves, and closet fixtures. A library or bookstore can help you to get some project ideas by going through some of the carpentry books. There are a plethora of patterns you can choose from the books which you can transfer to the wood. For a first time project, choose an uncomplicated design so that you can get used to the tools. Once you are comfortable with the measuring tools and power tools, you can proceed with a more complicated pattern.
